When I was growing up we called our sneakers,”TENNIS SHOES.”  However, in 1887, the word SNEAKER was already in use because The Boston Journal made reference to “sneakers” as “the name boys give to tennis shoes.” The name “sneakers” originally referred to how quiet the rubber soles were on the ground, in contrast to noisy standard hard leather sole dress shoes.  Little factoid for ya!

Now-a-days we have athletic shoes, sport shoes, running shoes, tennis shoes, cross trainers, sneakers, Jordans, Adidas, Puma, ASICS, and much more.  Sneakers are now worn for workout and for style.

In my world of FITness, I have a rotating shift of sneakers.  I have about 7 pair I rotate in any given week.  I also stay true to the 100 mile mark on my two pair of running shoes.  The rule of thumb on running or walking shoes is trash them after about 100 miles.

WHY?

As you wear and tear on the shoe, the give and support of the shoe will fad. The soles tread will get thin.  The fabric and arch support will stretch over time.   All of this in time adds stress and pressure to the ankles, feet and shins. If you experience on onset of foot pain, knee pain or shin discomfort….

Do a little self check.

If your feet start to hurt or you begin to notice pain in your ankles or shins do a little self inventory.  Think back to the season when you purchased your sneakers…then somewhat do some air math and see if you are over the 100 mile mark.  Generally all you need is a new pair of sneaks and the pain will subside.

We put alot of miles on our shoes.  Sneakers are not built to last.  They are designed to do a job which is support and help love on your feet as you grind out your activity.  People are getting in their steps but fail to get new kicks!

DO I WASH MY SNEAKERS!

OH BOY DO I!  YES, I do!

I like to keep my sneakers looking spiffy so I always wash my shoes about every month.I also use baby wipes to clean the sides and soles if I encounter mud or who knows what else.  I usually wash my sneakers on a delicate cycle and do hot and cold water.  I don’t however put my sneakers in the dryer.  I let my snakers air dry and I usually put a sneker ball in side or shove a dryer sheet up in the toe to give it some extra oomph!

STEP IN IT! ↵ Check this out..a small short story of dog poop!

One trick of the trade I have been using for years are these handy dandy sneaker balls.  These are golf ball size deodorant balls for the inside of your shoes. If you have kids these are a must for sweaty stinky feet.  They help tame the stench and keep the inside of the shoes smellng clean and fresh.  I buy in packs of three.  Click the link below direct form AMAZON!
